Question Four

Question Three

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

There are only a few Jazz magazines in the UK which are published by very small companies such as Jazzwise and Jazz UK but are not well known by many people and are unlikely to be seen in local newsagents. Jazzwise uses a small company called the Mark Allen Group as they are not a very big magazine made by enthusiasts who like jazz and are not a proper company.

Bauer Media Group is a large European-based media company, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany that manages a portfolio of more than 600 magazines around the world. They have approximately 11,000 employees in 17 countries. Bauer is the distributor of popular magazines such as 'Q' and 'KERRANG'. They also manage 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world.

I would want Bauer to be the company to produce my magazine as they are a large company who have be responsible for some of the large, popular magazines in the UK at the moment. With all the staff that Bauer have working over Europe they would be able to take care in my magazine ensuring that it had the correct time and attention to make my magazine successful.

'Q' are a sophisticated indie rock magazine who are one of the biggest music magazines. Although my magazine is a jazz magazine I would like my magazine to be like 'Q' as they have lots of interviews and articles from very famous musicians and are well recognised by many people. This why I think that Bauer is the right institution to distribute my magazine.

Double Page Spread Final Construction

Contents Final Construction

Front Cover Final Construction

Finishing the DPS

Today I finished my double page spread by adding more images on the rights side of the page. I added a white box around the image and added them on at a tilt as this made it look like the old fashioned images that came out with a white background. I added the same triangle as on the contents page on the right and left side to signify the page number. I added a large 'M' underneath the article as this is the first initial of her name. I got this idea from a double page spread that I saw in a VOGUE magazine.

Writing the interview

I added the interview, with an introduction paragraph explaining who Mia is and when the interview took place. I added a quote that she had said in the middle of the interview which is larger than the rest of the interview and put a drop shadow on the writing so that it stands out from the rest of the text. I also added the name of the magazine and the word features in the same fonts that I used when i wrote it on the front cover and contents page.

Creating my DPS

I started by adding the name of the artist, and an attention grabbing line at the top of the page. I put this on a tilt and added a drop shadow to both of the texts. I also added a rectangle shape around the text in a colour grey but changed it to a low opacity so that it had a light frame around it. I added a red line underneath this to separate this section from the interview.

Double Page Spread Image

The photo I chose for my double page spread is this:
This image, like the others, needed editing due to the background. This one had a large split in the background, also with lots of white marks. I used the patch tool on photo shop to clear the background and this is how my final image ended up:

Finishing the Contents

Today I finished my contents page buy adding an editors letter and a image of the editor. I made the blue strap across the top larger again to create an extra 'exclusive' column  I also added anchored text to the image of Mia telling the readers what page she will feature on. I added a triangle shape on the right side of the page with a large number '2'  in it, this signifies the page number.

Adding Text to Contents

I added the text using the same colours as on the front cover. Each page number is blue and each point has a red title with white writing. I also decided to make the blue strap across the top smaller so that it fits to the same size of the writing so that I have more space for other things on my contents page.

Creating my contents page

I added the masthead 'contents' using the same colour and font as the masthead on the front cover also using the same drop shadow effect. I added a blue strap across the page the same colour as the strap line on my front cover and used the same colours and fonts for the titles 'features' and 'regulars' so that my magazine flows and sticks to the same colour and font schemes.

Editing my contents page photo

This is the original image I chose for my contents page. As the background that I took the photos against had a few marks in it, I had to use the smudge tool again to correct the background.
This is my image after it has been edited:

Front Cover Feedback

I put the image of my front cover onto Facebook to get feedback from my friends and family for any improvements that I could make.

Finishing the Front Cover

After I added my cover lines, I added a puff and a strap line. I got the shapes from Google images and then used the fill bucket to change the colour to blue. I felt the blue was a good colour and it works well with red and also matched the colour of the models eyes. This was not originally in my initial plans but while creating the front cover I felt as though it needed another colour and blue worked well. I also made some small changes to the way that the headline was layed out and the main cover line.

Adding cover lines

I added my cover lines in, ensuring I had a mixture in fonts, sizes and colours. I also made my main cover line larger than the rest and put a drop shadow effect to match the masthead to make it stand out. I also added the issue number, date and website underneath the masthead.

Making my front cover

This is the image that I started with for my front cover. The first thing that I did to create my front cover was add a title.
My original plan for my title was for the colour to be gold but testing out a few different types of gold colours I came to the decision that it was not the best colour to use. It made the font look dark, so then I decided on this colour grey. The font I used for my title was a photoshop font called Broadway.
I then added a drop shadow onto my title to give it a better effect.

Editing my photos

When I done the photoshoot I did not have access to a large clean black backdrop so i knew that i would have to use photoshop to edit any imperfections out of the background.
The image that I started with, for my front cover, looked like this:
In this picture there are quite a few white marks and smudges across the background that would make my image look messy.
On photoshop I used the smudge tool to help clear the white marks and this was the result:
This image has a much neater background and there are no white marks.

Photoshoot

These are the images from the photoshoot I did with my model following the previous trial shoot. These pictures are much more successful than the others as I found the correct lighting for the pictures to come out clear and not blurry. I found that some of the images were still not successful due to costume and positioning but I had a lot more to work with for my magazine.

Make up

My model with have subtle natural make up as the image that female jazz singers had was very soft and elegant.
She will have red nail varnish on to match to colour scheme.

Text from my model

After the trial shoot I had to check with my model to make sure that she could meet with me on another day to do the shoot for my magazine.

What my model will wear

My model will be wearing a black and white knee length skirt in some of the images and will have a long black sophisticated dress for some of the others. Her hair has been curled as, from my research I found that the women had short curly hair which is why I chose a model with short hair.

Trial Shoot

These are the images I took when I first met with my model to do trial shoot to test the lighting, costume and make up. I struggled to find a good lighting and positioning for the model for the images to look good and the images were really bad and unusable. The images show how the trial shoot was not a success but it prepared me for the real shoot so I knew what did not work.
